At long last I got to visit a preserved railway this year. On a couple of occasions I had planned to go to one but something happened to make it impossible.
So I decided to go to the Epping Ongar Railway. On the Friday before I phoned the Railway to make sure a steam locomotive would be in action on Sunday. ‘Yes' was the reply No.4141 Large Prairie should be operating.
An early start on Sunday saw me get to my closest station at 8.10am. In theory it would be an easy journey, train up to Victoria, underground to Oxford Circus and then onto Epping. How wrong can you be? My local line had engineering works and so did the Central line. After around four hours I arrived at Epping station having been on two trains, two buses and three underground trains.
Unfortunately No.4141 had failed on the Saturday so no steam locomotive was operating. Despite this I did have an enjoyable day out. There is a good length of line, two smart stations and they have four steam locomotives. The volunteers are a friendly bunch. There is much work to do, the 'Class 25' diesel locomotive that hauled our train was obviously in good mechanical order but in desperate need of some paint.
Give them a visit, just make sure one of their steam locos is operating.
