Editors Notes

Writing the 'Other Railways' section of the website I have noticed that some organisations offer free return visits. So if you're short of cash the following venues offer this saving: Crich Tramway Village, East Anglia Transport Museum, Kew Bridge Waterworks Railway and the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum.

Many railway enthusiasts aspire to travel on a train pulled by 'Tornado' but not everyone can afford the £70 - £100 plus cost of a main line trip. From 13 - 19 September 'Tornado' will be at the West Somerset Railway they will be charging their normal £14.80 ticket fee. Booking in advance is advisable as there may be long queues.

Only railways that run steam trains on a regular basis are included in the main listings. All lines have a minimum of one mile of track and one station.

Not all trains will be hauled by steam locomotives, many railways use diesel power in off peak periods. Please check with the company concerned if you must travel by steam train.

If you decide to visit one of the railways go to their web site for the latest information. Many have talking timetables which will give details of the service to be provided in the coming period. Note that  telephone lines will probably only be answered when trains are running.

We have tried to indicate the days a railway is operating a service but some have a variable timetable so you must check with the organisation to confirm trains are running on a certain day.

Special event days will probably be a different price to the one indicated.
